At the end of the course, the holder of the BTS Medical Biology is able to:

- Plan his/her activity in the laboratory

- Manage stocks of consumable materials and reactive products

    - Carry out routine maintenance of equipment

    - Managing stocks of therapeutic biological products and biological samples

    - Participating in the accreditation or certification process for activities

    - Analysing occupational risks according to the examinations

    - Preparing workstations and equipment

    -. Implementing internal quality controls

    - Performing pre-analytical processing of samples and anatomical parts

    - Performing biological analyses

    - Technically validating analysis results

    - Issuing labile blood products in compliance with current regulations

    - Implementing laboratory techniques in the context of medically assisted procreation

    - Participating in the development of a technique new to the laboratory

    - Contributing to the validation of a medical analysis method

    - Comparing an innovative method with a reference method

    - Cooperating within a multi-professional team

    - Training peers or trainees at the workstation

    - Communicating personal health data

    - Developing professionally

    - Study information relating to a biological sample

    - Welcome and take charge of the person to be sampled

    - Prepare the sample in accordance with the prescription

    - Perform the sample in simulated practice in accordance with current practices

    - Follow up the sample and associated documents in compliance with regulations

    - Check the metrological compliance of equipment

    The training is organised into several skill modules, allowing for step-by-step progression. It alternates between theoretical input, practical exercises and assessment sessions in order to promote practical and progressive learning.

    BC01 – Implementing a quality approach and operational organisation within the clinical chemistry laboratory

    • Ensuring the smooth running of the laboratory.
    • Managing equipment, stock and operations.
    • Implement the quality management system and continuous improvement.

    BC02 – Carry out the most common medical tests

    • Prepare and organise the workstation.
    • Carry out analyses using manual and automated techniques.
    • Check and validate the analysis results.

    BC03 - Improve clinical laboratory analysis methods and implement therapeutic practices

    • Adapt and improve analysis methods.
    • Contribute to the laboratory’s accreditation.
    • Implement therapeutic practices.

    BC04 - Foster professional relationships, collaboration and development

    • Communicate and collaborate with healthcare professionals.
    • Comply with confidentiality and digital security rules.
    • Keep abreast of developments and develop one’s skills.

     BC05 - Prepare for the collection of blood and other biological samples and carry out these procedures in a simulated setting

    • Analyse the information required to carry out a biological sample collection
    • Interact with the person from whom the sample is being taken during a biological sample collection
    • Carry out a biological sample collection in a simulated practical session
    • Identify specific situations and emergency situations

    General subjects: General knowledge and communication skills, English, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry

    Throughout the course, learners receive personalised support with regular monitoring by the teaching team and progress reviews to tailor learning to each individual’s needs. A work placement also enables students to develop professional skills in a real-world setting. Skills are assessed progressively through role-plays, practical exercises, professional projects and assessments carried out throughout the course. Our teaching methodology prioritises a practical, industry-focused approach: case studies, role-plays, practical scenarios and collaborative activities enable learning in conditions that closely resemble the real-world workplace.

    Maximum total duration of 2,700 hours, including 1,350 hours in a company and 1,350 hours at the training centre.

    Assessments are organised throughout the course and at the end of the programme, in accordance with the qualification framework. Assessment tests may take the form of in-course assessments (CCF) and/or final examinations.

    Support with exam preparation is provided throughout the course to help candidates succeed.

    This qualification is awarded following validation by the academic examination board.

    If a candidate fails the qualification, they retain credit for the modules they have passed and may retake the remaining examinations at a later date. The modules passed remain valid for 5 years

    The holder of the "Medical Biology" advanced technician's certificate exercises the regulated profession of medical laboratory technician (MLT).

    He/she works in the following public or private structures:

    • hospital medical biology laboratories
    • "city" medical biology laboratories
    • sampling sites
    • reproductive biology laboratories
    • pathological anatomy and cytology pathology laboratories
    • French blood establishment laboratories
    • Cancer centre laboratories
    • Diagnostic and therapeutic research and development laboratories

    It also carries out off-site biology.

    The aim of the BTS is professional integration but, with a very good record, further study is possible in a professional degree (in the agri-food or pharmaceutical industries, for example), a general degree in biology or chemistry, or an ATS preparatory class.
